A domegrown dome can be erected in a day by a small team, far quicker then a traditional timber frame "BOX" house.
During an earthquake a dome is far stronger then ANY shape. If we are considering emergency housing or a NEW subdivision a haven for people that have been misplaced by a catastrophic event such as this Christchurch earthquake. What better enviroment for people to feel safe in a dome which is light and very strong that will not fall and crush or buckle.
Imagine the world wide publicity of a subdivision of "domes" erected as a model of sustainability with gutter systems to collect rain water organic toilet systems and solar panels. Housing that can Live through another earthquake. The Napier earthquake was an opportunity to think progressively and we did by adopting art deco. Art deco in my opinion was Foolish they build bulky housing and businesses that can fall and crush people.
The cost of a dome city would be far less then traditional methods of say timber framing or dear I say it brick housing. The feeling of safety inside these structures would give the people of christchurch a great reason to stay and know in the future another earthquake, Which is inevitable as we ALL know. It's going to happen again. If we are progressive thinkers a new way of thinking needs to be adopted for housing in this obviously earthquake prone part of the world.
